There are many brands and types of chainsaws from which you can choose. And some people are wondering which brand of chainsaws is the best? Makita, Remington, Black & Decker make excellent electric chainsaws, and Husqvarna, Stihl, Poulan Pro, Echo make excellent gasoline chainsaws.
Chainsaws come in different bar lengths, and the optimal size depends on the thickness of the wood you are going to cut. Many homeowners prefer chainsaws with a 16-inch bar. And those who often have to cut large diameter trees prefer 18 inches.

What Will You be Using the Chainsaw for?
Do you buy a chainsaw to cut big trees and do it all day? In this case, you will probably need a large and powerful professional chainsaw from brands such as Husqvarna, Stihl, or Echo. Similarly, if you are using the chainsaw to cut small trees around your house, limbing and pruning, then a small chainsaw with a shorter guide bar will likely be the way to go.back to menu ↑
Safety features of a chainsaw
I probably should have started with this chainsaw buying guide, but safety is absolutely the most important thing when it comes to choosing a good chainsaw. When buying a gasoline-powered chainsaw, you need to be sure you can operate the saw before you start using it. If you’re a beginner, take a closer look at electric chainsaws – especially cordless chainsaws.
There are a number of safety features on most chainsaws nowadays:
•Chain Brake. This is probably the single greatest improvement in chainsaw safety. In the event of kickback, your forward hand will hit a guard that stops the chain instantly.
•Easy to access stop button. A button that will stop the chainsaw in an emergency. The button must be easy to operate with one hand.
•Chain and Bar design. This plays a huge role in reducing kickbacks. A kickback occurs when the tip of the saw strikes something hard, the smaller the radius of the tip the less the chances of kickback. Best chainsaw chains and bars have a low-kickback feature that reduces the chances that kickback will occur.
•In addition to the safety features built into the chainsaw, operators should also wear #AD chainsaw protection gear.back to menu ↑
What’s chainsaw bar length and engine size do you need?
This is largely determined by the size of the trees that you will, of course, cut down. Chainsaw power is measured by engine size/power and guide bar length. Typically, a beginner and homeowner gas-powered chainsaw will be less than 50cc.
Bar length is a very important consideration; a saw with a shorter bar will be easier to control than a longer one as it is significantly lighter. Bar length varies from about 10-Inches to over 30-Inches. For most homeowners/ recreational chainsaws with 14-Inch and 16-Inch bar is large enough. A chainsaw with a bar length of 14-Inch’ is considered a small chainsaw (which is good as it easier to handle).
- A 14-inch bar will handle up to a 26-inch log.
- A 16-inch bar will handle up to a 30-inch log.
If you plan on cutting logs larger than that, then you’ll need a larger bar.back to menu ↑
How often will you be using a chainsaw?
For occasional firewood cutting and general use, a small bar length of about 14-16 inches is suitable for most homeowners. For purposes such as firewood cutting and sawing fallen trees around your house and pruning, an electric chainsaw or chainsaw with an engine capacity of no more than 50 cubic meters is a very good choice.
Something like the #AD WORX WG303.1 would be good for most homeowners.
If however, you are going to be feeling large trees on a regular basis, cutting hardwood, and spending a lot of time using the saw, you may want a longer bar and a greater engine capacity. It will be worth investing in a saw with a bit more power. The Husqvarna 450 would be perfect.
For professional use, you need a high-performance chainsaw. For this use, something like a Husqvarna 460 Rancher with a 20-inch bar and a 60.3cc engine is a good choice.
For small cutting tasks, an electric chainsaw would be good as it is light and nimble making it easy to control a chainsaw when cutting.
How experienced are you?
This is a very important consideration. I strongly recommend against buying a large capacity saw with a very large bar (more than 18″) as your first chainsaw. A small chainsaw will be more maneuverable and much easier for a beginner to use.
A big chainsaw will have more space between the handles and the longer bar will make the front of the chainsaw heavier. If you are inexperienced, apart from anything else, you will find a large chainsaw that will tire you quickly which is dangerous.back to menu ↑
Gas-powered or Electric chainsaw – what is better?
Gas-powered chainsaws used to be the only option for sawing a tree that fell on your site after a severe hurricane. This has changed a lot, however, and now most of the major chainsaw manufacturers are producing powerful electric chainsaws. Ultimately, the gas-powered chainsaw will always be more powerful for tough conditions, and that’s the right way to go if you need a very powerful chainsaw. But most people will be fine using an electric/cordless chainsaw.back to menu ↑
Electric chainsaw pros and cons
- Cheaper (usually)
- Easy to start
- Better for occasional use as you don’t have to drain gas when not in use for a while.
- Lighter and easier to control
- No fumes
- Less powerful than gas-powered chainsaws
- You have to plug it in so you are restricted in where you go
- Sluggish in cold weather
Gas-Powered chainsaw pros and cons
- You can take it anywhere
- Not affected by temperature
- More reliable (usually)
- Sometimes hard to start
So, as you can see neither is better than the other, they simply have different applications. If you need to take the saw to places without a power source you will have to opt for a gas or cordless chainsaw.
